How to Maintain Timber Decking All Year Round

How to Maintain Timber Decking All Year Round

Timber decking is a great way to add warmth and character to any garden, but like anything that lives outdoors, it needs a bit of TLC to keep it looking sharp. At Hales Sawmills, we know a thing or two about timber, and we’ve pulled together this simple guide to help you keep your decking in top condition all year round.

Spring: Time for a Refresh

After a long winter, your timber decking is probably crying out for a clean. Start by giving it a good sweep to get rid of leaves, moss and dirt. Next up, bring out the decking cleaner. A decent cleaner will help lift off the grime and prepare the wood for any treatments you plan to apply.

If your decking has old, peeling stains or oils, now’s the time to use a decking stripper. This removes built-up coatings so your timber can breathe again and absorb fresh treatments properly.

Summer: Treat and Protect

Once your decking is clean and dry, it’s ready for protection. This is where a good decking oil comes in. It nourishes the wood, brings out the natural grain, and helps protect it from the summer sun and rain showers.

We always recommend oiling your decking every year – it really helps preserve the timber and keeps it looking its best. Apply a thin, even coat with a brush or roller and let it soak in. If your decking’s particularly thirsty, go in with a second coat once the first has dried.

Autumn: Keep on Top of the Clean-Up

Leaves and damp conditions can be a recipe for slippery decking, so keep an eye on build-up. Regular sweeping helps, and you can use your decking cleaner again if things are starting to look green or slimy.

If you’ve had lots of BBQs or garden parties over the summer, now’s also a good time to give it another quick wash before winter sets in.

Winter: Minimal Fuss, Maximum Protection

You don’t need to do too much in winter, but keeping your decking clear of snow, ice and debris can stop moisture from seeping into the wood and causing problems. Avoid using salt or harsh chemicals; a plastic shovel and a soft broom will do the job nicely.

If your decking has been well-oiled in the summer, it should be fine to sit tight through the colder months. Come spring, you’ll be ready to freshen it up again.
