HardwoodÂ
When treating iroko hardwood gates, the ideal oils are those specifically formulated for dense, oily hardwoods, providing good UV protection and weather resistance. Here are the top recommendations:
1. Osmo UV-Protection Oil Extra
- Features: Provides strong UV protection, slows down graying, penetrates well, and maintains the natural look of the wood.
- Benefits: Itâs microporous, which means it allows the wood to breathe while still protecting it from the elements.
- Application: Easy to apply and maintain, typically requiring two coats for outdoor use.
2. Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus
- Features: A high-performance wood stain with excellent durability and UV resistance. Provides a semi-transparent finish that enhances the wood grain.
- Benefits: This product is flexible and long-lasting, protecting against peeling and cracking. Itâs great for outdoor gates that need more color depth.
- Application: Can be applied as a base layer or topcoat, especially effective in regions with harsh weather.
3. Danish Oil or Teak Oil
- Features: These oils penetrate deeply and provide water resistance while enhancing the natural look of iroko wood.
- Benefits: Ideal for gates in milder climates, they bring out the richness of the wood while providing some level of UV and moisture protection.
- Application: Requires reapplication every 6-12 months, depending on exposure.
Important Tips:
- Preparation: Sand the gates lightly and clean them before applying any oil to ensure proper absorption.
- Application: Use a brush or lint-free cloth, applying thin, even coats. Always follow the manufacturer’s drying times and recoat recommendations.
Using these oils will help maintain the iroko woodâs rich color and extend the life of your gates.

Measuring for Bespoke Gates

If your gate posts or walls are already installed and our standard gate sizes wont fit your bespoke requirements, we will make them to measure for you.Â
To measure for your bespoke gate, follow the 2 simple steps below.
STEP ONE: We recommend taking three measurements from between the posts – top, middle & bottom.
STEP TWO: Reduce the smallest measurements by 40mm for driveway gate (allowing 15mm each side and 10mm in the middle), or 20mm for single gates (allowing 10mm each side). This is the measurements of the width of the gate required, providing a neat fit while allowing for natural swelling that is a feature of timber gates and your hinges.Â
!Please note measuring for bespoke gates is not always easy and various other factors might need to be taken into account. We would advice getting a tradesman to take this measurement!
